"Light My Fire" 30x40 - Jim Morrison by James Freeborne Welch
"Light My Fire" 30x40 - Jim Morrison of the Doors, by James Freeborne Welch. This giclee is inspired by one of James' all-time favorite musicians. He and his band love playing Jim Morrison's songs during their shows (because who wouldn't?). Fun fact: James' mother actually hung out with Jim Morrison back in the day in LA.
Artist/Gallery owner, James Freeborne Welch's distinctive style of oil paintings draws inspiration from a diverse range of influences, including Van Gogh, the vibrant lifestyle of Maui, Rock and Roll, and his love of automobiles. However, his most profound influence is his father, James Welch Sr., a fellow painter and a proud three-time Vietnam veteran who served his country with honor.
Growing up amidst the surf and sand of Santa Cruz, California, instilled in Jim a deep appreciation for beach life and its myriad offerings. Since relocating to Maui in 1993, his unique original paintings have been showcased in various local galleries, art shows, craft fairs, coffee houses, and more. Notably, he was sponsored by AT&T to create a commissioned mural with 65 underprivileged children at Camp Keanae.
As a member of the Lahaina Art Society, Jim's work has been displayed in the historic building adjacent to Banyan Tree Park, where local artists exhibited their finest relics, paintings, sculptures, and other artistic endeavors. The themes in Jim's art, which reflect his childhood and life experiences, often feature luminescent cityscapes, dreamy palm tree beach scenes, serene water lily imagery, and tributes to Rock & Roll legends.
During covid 2019 James started fabricating and building 3D car art sculptures. His greatest passion lies in repurposing/upcycling salvaged cars into unique furniture pieces, such as car couches, executive desks, coffee tables, and spirit dispensers, crafted from parts of Porsches, MGs, Jaguars, and more. These automotive-inspired art pieces have garnered significant attention from car enthusiasts.
In his free time, Jim recharges by surfing, playing music with his band, restoring his collection of Italian and British cars, working on his YouTube channel, and spending quality time with his dogs, Cocobella and Bentley, family and friends. You can view his latest works at the Enchantress and Freeborne Gallery, co-owned by James and his partner Bootzie, located in the Shops at Wailea.
Jim's tributes to Rock & Roll legends are particularly fascinating, as they reveal the profound impact that music has had on his life and art. Each piece is meticulously crafted, with vibrant colors and bold brushstrokes that capture the energy and spirit of the musicians they represent. These tributes are not only a celebration of iconic artists, but also a reflection of Jim's own experiences and memories.
Perhaps the most unique and innovative aspect of Jim's work is his repurposing of salvaged cars into furniture pieces. This creative endeavor demonstrates not only Jim's artistic talent, but also his ingenuity and resourcefulness. Each piece is a true work of art, combining the classic elegance of vintage cars with the functionality of modern furniture. These automotive-inspired creations have become highly sought after, and they serve as a testament to Jim's versatility as an artist.
